The Company was incorporated as Hind Gas Co., Ltd. on 14th June, 1944, in the state of West Bengal. The name of the Company was changed to Hindustan Gas Co., Ltd. by special resolution passed at the meeting of members on 11th October, 1944.
The name of the Company was further changed to Hindustan Gas & Industries Ltd. by a special resolution passed at meeting of members on 17th August, 1961. The name of the Company was subsequently changed to HGI Industries Ltd. by special resolution adopted in the Annual General Meeting of the members of the Company held on 20th June, 1988 and the Registrar issued a Fresh Certificate of Incorporation dated 24th July, 1998.

It is listed on the Calcutta Sock Exchange Limited.
